How To Heal Eczema

It’s likely that you, or someone you know, has dealt with eczema. And if you have, you know how irritating and uncomfortable it can be without proper treatment. Eczema is a common chronic non-infectious skin condition also known as “atopic dermatitis,” which usually comes and goes in the form of “flare ups.”

SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA

Symptoms include dry, itchy, and cracked skin that can sometimes blister and ooze liquid. This can affect any area of the body. The epidural part of our skin acts as a defense shield repelling bacteria and infections, but inevitably there are irritants that may cause an immune response that can lead to an eczema flare up. Genes play a major role in someone's risk, but it can also be triggered by things such as: scented products, cigarettes/smoke, dramatic changes in weather, pollen, animal dander, dust mites, rough scratchy materials (like wool), sweating, stress, and food allergies.

HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT ECZEMA

There isn’t an exact cure for eczema, but there ARE skincare practices and treatments you can implement to help treat its symptoms….

  • It's important to resist the urge to itch and pick at the the flare up.

  • Stay away from skincare products that have perfumes and essential oils.

  • Use only gentle, hydrating products – stay away from anything skin-drying. Some anti-inflammatory ingredients to look for to help soothe your skin are: honey, oat, shea butter, vitamin e, petroleum, and niacinamides.

  • Press an ice pack to your skin when it's feeling really inflamed and itchy. The will help calm the heat and inflammation so you don't itch.

  • Red light LED therapy is proven to help soothe and heal inflammation, itchiness, dryness.

  • Consult with a dermatologist about getting a topical steroid. These are super powerful and are proven to heal your symptoms quickly – but should only be used until your flare up subsides.

  • Add a humidifier to your home/bedroom to add moisture to your dry skin.

  • Do a good sweep and mop to your floors, wipe down furniture, and dust anything that needs it. We also suggest keeping your windows and doors closed during pollen season (spring time). Dust mites, pet dander, and pollen are known to trigger an eczema flare up and can easily accumulate in your home.
