How To: Fall Skincare

Yes!! Bring on the chilly weather, warm sweaters, and cozy nights in. We’re so here for it. This seasonal change is also a good time to reassess your skincare routine—we always tell our clients to switch up their skincare seasonally. Odds are, your skin is in desperate need of repair and rejuvenation after this Summer—excess build up of dead skin and oil and hyperpigmentation from sun-exposure. And now as we fade into fall, we’ll experience a drop in humidity and crisper, chillier air (plus the dry heat you’re getting from indoor heating), which will likely leave your skin feeling more dry, itchy, and irritated. Let’s go over some things you should swap out as you transition from your Summer to Fall skincare routine.

Things To Swap In

Chemical Exfoliation: You most likely shelved your active ingredients over the Summer months. The start of Fall is a good time to get back into doing regular chemical exfoliation and/or a retinol, so that you can remove the months of sweat, heavy SPF, and excess oil. We love VIVANT’S Derm-A-Gel, a retinol that works to boost cellular metabolism, reduce fine lines, promote a more even skin tone, and clear blemishes, all while nourishing skin with anti-inflammatory and moisturizing ingredients.

Add another layer of hydration: It may not be quite time to be reaching for that thick, heavy moisturizer (like you probably would in the Winter). However, that light-weight moisturizer you were using in the Summer probably won’t cut it either. We recommend adding another layer of hydration to your moisturizer in the form of an oil/serum for now, like Hyaluronic acid. We also love layering Beauty Shamans’ Omega Oils under our moisturizer for that extra boost of hydration. And if you do happen to be needing that thick, heavy moisturizer sooner rather than later, we highly recommend VIVANT’S Allantoin lotion.

Vitamin C Serum: Applying a Vitamin C serum can help repair sun damage (dark spots, fine lines/wrinkles). Apply this after you cleanse and tone, and before you moisturize. Be sure to not use this serum with Niacinamide or any Vitamin A product (retinoids). Pssst - All Beauty Shamans Omega Oils have Vitamin C in them!

Purchase a Humidifier: If you know your skin to get especially dry and irritated in the Fall/Winter months, we definitely recommend investing in a humidifier. Humidifiers pull moisture back into the air, which can help prevent and improve dry and itchy skin, chapped lips, and even allergies. This is extra helpful if your landlord is notorious for cranking up the heat in your apartment.

Warm Water: If your skin is feeling extra dry and itchy, we recommend using cold-warm water when washing your face. Using hot water during the colder months can damage the surface of your skin and dry you out even more—leading to more serious conditions like extreme inflammation and eczema.

Get a facial! If you’re concerned about your post-Summer skin, or just want to get ahead of dry, itchy Fall skin then come see us for a facial! We have a number of services that will help repair from Summer and prepare for Fall—whether that be treating hyperpigmentation, or getting the skin plumped and hydrated (listed at the bottom).
